Meidling’s “L” Brings Greenery to the City: A New Model for Climate-Resilient Neighborhoods

The MEIDLINGER “L” exploratory study is developing a framework for a transformation and a demonstration project for new vertical and horizontal green spaces on building facades and in the street environment. The project takes an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to climate change adaptation in the existing building stock at the interface between public and private spaces.
A scalable and replicable model is being developed for Vienna and other cities at the neighborhood level. Using an integrated approach, the project explores and evaluates issues related to process design, legal, financial, organizational, and social frameworks – with the City of Vienna serving as a prime example – as well as combined greening and energy technologies, installation, and maintenance.
Furthermore, feasible, sustainable, and future-proof financing models will be identified, and a co-creative process for neighborhood-level climate change adaptation will be established to ensure community integration and a sense of belonging.
