Rethinking Mobility Budgets: MoBuLab Develops Five Sustainable Options for Companies
Mobility budgets are considered a key tool on the path to climate neutrality – but existing models are often fragmented, difficult to compare, and hard for companies to grasp. MoBuLab brings clarity: The project systematically analyzes at least five existing mobility budget models and at least five newly developed AI-supported variants, validates them with key stakeholders, and distills the findings into concrete recommendations for action.
The transformation of the transportation sector is one of the key challenges on the path to climate neutrality by 2040. Traditional company car models or flat-rate mobility allowances fall short in this regard – targeted mobility budgets open up new opportunities for companies, employees, and society.
With MoBuLab, the project team aims to systematically analyze, develop, and transparently present at least five variants of the mobility budget. To this end, the project combines a (inter)national market analysis and qualitative needs assessment among experts, users, and policymakers with AI-supported prototyping and stakeholder-centered product development in moderated focus groups.
The proposed options are evaluated based on the dimensions of financing, potential uses, technical implementation, and sustainability and tax considerations—with the goal of offering companies the ability to implement solutions quickly and providing policymakers with a sound basis for institutional incentive models. Finally, the project team develops specific recommendations for action and stakeholder-specific fact sheets.
